About Massachusetts MEGA Millions
The Massachusetts Mega Millions was originally launched under the name of The Big Game in August 1996. Massachusetts State Lottery, together with Georgia,
Illinois, Virginia, Michigan and Maryland state lotteries were pioneer states in creating this multi-state lottery game.
Massachusetts Mega Millions is a lottery game and it funds all sorts of utilities provided by the Massachusetts State to its communities. Around 35% of
Massachusetts Mega Millions revenue from ticket sales sustains educational and environmental projects, just to name a few areas of action. Of the remaining
65%, 15% are needed for commissions and operation services and the remaining 50% is added to the prizes as in other states.
The Big Game involved a super jackpot and was an immediate success. For that reason a second drawing was added a couple of years after its launch. In
Massachusetts, the first remarkable prize went to a Boston babysitter who won the jackpot of $197 million, when Massachusetts Mega Millions was still
called The Big Game.
In 2002, the game was renamed The Big Game Mega Millions and its current name of Mega Millions dates from June 2005.
The matrix of the Massachusetts Mega Millions, much like the name of the game, has undergone a few changes throughout the years.
The Massachusetts Mega Millions currently involves two sets of numbers. From the first set of 56 numbers, five are chosen and from the second set of 46
only one is picked. This number is now called the Mega Ball but it was known as the Big Money Ball until the first renaming of the game. Until 1999 it was
picked from a pool of 25. After 1999, the player chose five numbers out of fifty and the Big Money Ball out of 36. From 2002 until 2012 the basic game
remained unchanged, the player choosing five out of 50 and the Mega Ball out of 52 as well. These continuing changes allowed for higher jackpots to build
as it became more difficult to match all the numbers.
The prizes involved also changed. In 2005 the minimum jackpot prize became $12 million and the other prizes increased as well.
In 2010, the agreement regarding Mega Millions and Powerball games added 23 more state lotteries to the already vast list of 12 member states playing Mega
Millions. The money raised for the jackpots started increasing exponentially with the overwhelming numbers of players it now involved.
Another important feature that was added to the Massachusetts Mega Millions and that is not available in all states is the Megaplier option. It has been
available since January 2011 and for the extra wage of $1 it allows players to double, triple or quadruple its prizes. However, the Megaplier does not
apply to the jackpot.
Moreover, Massachusetts Mega Millions is one of Massachusetts Lottery Games for which season tickets of 3 months, 6 months or 1 year are available.
The Mega Millions has been responsible for some of the greatest jackpots awarded in US Lottery history, including March 2012.s record-breaking $656
jackpot. The race for the tickets was so fierce that on draw day, retailers sold $22000 in tickets on peak hours.
Massachusetts Mega Millions made it to the top ten Mega Million winners with its $294 jackpot prize in July 2004, won solely by a Lowell resident
